This poem has spoken to me since I first read it. I’ve carried it in my wallet for years. I had it posted on the wall in my classroom and one year when I spoke at an eighth grade graduation I shared it as part of my speech.
If you think you are beaten, you are
If you think you dare not, you don’t,
If you like to win, but you think you can’t
It is almost a cinch you won’t.
If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost
For out of the world we find,
Success begins with a person’s will
It’s all in the state of mind.
If you think you are outclassed, you are
You’ve got to think high to rise,
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win a prize.
Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger or faster at hand,
But soon or late the one who wins
Is the one WHO THINKS HE CAN!
This just keeps me going, it reminds me that a lot of things are mind over matter. I also tend to be an optimistic/ glass is half full person so this fits my perspective on life. I’m not an I Can’t person and I don’t allow those words in my classroom. I give my students alternatives: I don’t know how. I’m struggling. I need help. I really do think this can make a huge difference.
